A revamped petrol station in cycling town Tampines has introduced amenities to draw in two-wheelers. The Shell station has a designated bay where cyclists can park their bicycles and do minor repairs.
Called Take a Brake, the bicycle bay is among the new features at the station. The others are an air-conditioned lounge where motorists and cyclists can stop and charge their mobile phones, and a 24-hour McDonald's drive-through.
The Shell station also has an expanded Shell Select store that offers a bigger variety of food and beverages. The lounge and food store will open from Monday (June 12).
But the McDonald's drive-through and bicycle bay have been open since the middle of last month.
Residents such as student Keith Tang, 16, an avid cyclist, welcomed the new bay for bikes, saying "its repair tools and air-pump will be useful when we get a punctured tyre".
The location and large size of the station and the active cycling community were the key factors that led Shell to provide the extras for cyclists, said Ms Aarti Nagarajan, general manager for retail sales and operations for Shell Singapore, at the station's official debut on Wednesday (June 7).
Tampines is one of five cycling towns in Singapore, with a network of cycling paths that gives riders easy access to amenities such as the MRT station and the town centre.
The revamped Shell station also houses a new in-store bakery, Deli by Shell, with pastries baked daily at the store.
