Gazprom and Fluxys develop small scale LNG facilities in Europe

Russian gas giant Gazprom and Belgian gas operator Fluxys have signed a deal to cooperate on the construction and operation of small-scale liquefied natural gas (LNG) infrastructures in Europe such as LNG terminals, filling stations, and bunkering infrastructure.

The framework agreement was signed by Alexander Medvedev, Deputy Chairman of the Gazprom Management Committee, and Pascal De Buck, Fluxys Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer on March 29 in Paris, according to a Gazprom company release. “Small-scale LNG is not just a cost-effective and eco-friendly alternative to conventional fuels in different fields of economy including industry and transport. It is one of key growth areas in European gas consumption. By developing this segment, Gazprom will further diversify its export potential and increase sustainable supplies of energy to Europe,” Medvedev said.

Developing the infrastructure, according to De Buck, is in line with the European Union’s sustainable energy strategy as well as facilitates power provision to remote industrial sites not connected into a gas network. A similar agreement had been signed between Gazprom and Dutch gas company Gasunie in early 2015.
