Club lounges for Applegreen customers

Motorway service area company Applegreen is targeting corporate customers by looking to add executive lounges to its petrol stations in the Republic of Ireland.

The company has already installed one such lounge at an outlet in Lisburn, Ireland.

"It's aimed at business customers and those wishing for a quieter place to relax," Applegreen chief operating officer Joe Barrett told the Sunday Independent.

"Many business customers come in and have meetings there. All the facilities are free to use and it's set up for being able to link in with wi-fi, recharge your laptop, and it has desk spaces to let people easily work whole out of their office . . . We think it's a great facility and we've got a lot of positive customer feedback about it."

Barrett said the company was looking to bring the executive lounge facility to stations in the Republic over time. The company has applied for planning permission for new sites in Naas and Ennis and has "a number of others in the pipeline", he said.

Last week Applegreen announced a partnership with Canadian fresh food company Freshii, designed to improve the Irish company's food offering. Food has become increasingly important in the petrol station sector as companies seek to encourage customers to do more than just buy fuel. "Food is a growing part of our business. In terms of sales revenue I don't think it'll overtake fuel, as fuel is a high volume, low margin product. As a general rule it's approximately 85pc-15pc split in terms of fuel versus non-fuel products," Barrett said.
