Mexico’s first electric vehicle (EV) charging station within a gas station was recently launched in the city of Tampico, Tamaulipas. It is free of charge electric and hybrid car owners
The gas station is part of Nexum, a network of “sustainable” service stations that offer services such as fuel pumps, convenience stores, EV chargers, bills payment, banking services, movie ticket sales, and Wi-Fi.
Nexum’s parent company and convenience store and gas station operator Grupo Garel together with Mexico’s Federal Electricity Commission (CEF), Mexican National Organization of Petroleum Dealers (ONEXPO), and Nissan Mexicana have joined forces to launch this initiative, according to ONEXPO’s website.
The project aims to develop infrastructure for renewable energy and promote the use of environment-friendly vehicles. In five years’ time, 2,300 sustainable stations are expected to be set up in the country, according to El Economista.
Last year, the first EV chargers in the country were installed at Walmart stores and made available free of charge to the public, according to mexiconewsdaily.com.
