Energy minister's intervention averts petroleum crisis in Jamaica

The Jamaica Gasolene Retailers Association says there will not be a disruption in fuel supply in the retail network as it will not instruct its members to suspend petroleum sales at their outlets.

The JGRA said the decision was taken after Minister of Energy, Science and Technology Andrew Wheatley requested that the JGRA suspend whatever industrial action was being contemplated at the expiration of the seven-day ultimatum issued to RUBiS.

The JGRA gave petroleum marketing company RUBiS a deadline to respond favourably to its requests to represent RUBiS dealers in their contract negotiations with the company.

In a news release, the JGRA said the minister responded to their call for his intervention by summoning the JGRA to his office on September 23, where he was updated on the current impasse between the JGRA and RUBiS Energy Jamaica Limited.

The meeting was also reportedly attended by David Miller, executive director of the Fair Trading Commission (FTC); Hillary Alexander, permanent secretary in the Ministry of Energy Science and Technology; Collen Weise, legal counsel at the ministry, and other technocrats.

The JGRA said it gave a full update on the contentious, contractual issues and having also heard comments from the FTC and other participants, the minister requested that the JGRA suspend whatever industrial action was being contemplated.

“The JGRA will, therefore, in keeping with the minister’s request, not instruct its members to suspend petroleum sales at their outlets pending the outcome of a meeting between RUBiS and his ministry,” the JGRA said.
