The City of Portland in the US is using less diesel by transforming human waste bi-products into fuel.
They're teaming up with Northwest Natural for the "Poop to Power Project” that sets up a renewable natural gas fueling station at the wastewater treatment plant on Columbia Boulevard
It makes fuel from chemicals naturally created when sewage breaks down. “By next year, we'll capture one hundred percent of the methane gas from the city's wastewater treatment plant and convert it to clean fuel,” said City Commissioner
Nick Fish. “Our goal is to convert all our trucks from dirty diesel to renewable natural gas and to use the waste stream to power them.”
Any leftover gas will pump out into Northwest Natural's distribution grid.
