Italy's Eni, Hera partner to convert used vegetable oil into biofuel

Italian energy major Eni and utility Hera signed a partnership agreement Friday with the aim of converting used vegetable oil into biofuel for Hera's waste collection vehicles.

The household waste oil collected by Hera will be sent to the Eni biorefinery in Porto Marghera, Venice, and will be used initially by around 30 large vehicles in the Modena area.

Hera collected 800 mt of used vegetable oil in 2017 from around 400 roadside containers and about 120 collection centers, which were processed for use as lubricants or energy.

To further support the initiative, Hera intends to introduce 300 new dedicated containers in the areas in which it operates to boost the roadside collection of vegetable oil. Eni has established similar deals with multi-utility companies in Turin, Venice and Rome.
