Fuel station count in the UK still falling

The number of filling stations in the United Kingdom continues to drop with 2015 ending the year with a total of 8,472 sites – 137 fewer forecourts than 2014. The rhythm at which petrol stations are closing down has picked up during 2015. The 8,472 sites meant a decrease of 1.59 percent, compared with a fall of just 0.02% a year earlier, and a drop of 0.94% in 2013, according to latest Retail Marketing Survey, conducted by the Energy Institute.

BP continues to lead the forecourt branding field with 1,278 gas stations, up from 1,163 the year before. Esso (1,030) and Shell (1,023) take second and third place after experiencing little variation in their numbers; while Texaco is ranked fourth, listing 820 branded petrol stations – almost 50 more than in 2014.
