Lawson to use self-checkout machines at all stores in Japan

Japanese convenience store chain Lawson Inc will make self-checkout machines available at all outlets nationwide by the end of September 2019.

Lawson has already installed new cash registers with a self-checkout function at all stores as part of efforts to deal with labour shortages. The company will let customers use the self-checkout function in stages. When using the machines, customers scan the bar codes of items and pay by credit card or other means of cashless payments.

Alcoholic beverages and cigarettes for which stores need to confirm customer age cannot be checked out with the machines.
