Students protest in Ghana against filling station construction

Following the fire last year at a petrol station in Accra, Ghana, which resulted in the tragic loss of 150 lives, Students of the University of Professional Studies (UPSA), Madina, Accra, have demonstrated against the construction of a filling station near the university. Some of the placards read include “UPSA in danger”, “Think about our lives”, “Humanity first”, and “professionals are in danger”.

The university is situated between the Christ Embassy Church and the filling station construction site. In an interview with GNA Wilson Delali Agyeman, President of the Department of Accounting Students Association said the university authorities have made efforts to prevent a lurking disaster. .Mr Agyeman cited recent tragedies that plagued the country such as the June 3 disaster last year.

These sad events were partly due to negligence of some people, institutional failure and unexplainable conditions, he noted. He called on President John Dramani Mahama, Member of Parliament, Environmental Protection Agency, National Petroleum Commission and Municipal Chief Executive, to act as soon as possible on matter.
