Wawa is opening its first Drive-Thru store

Wawa, the beloved convenience store known for its made-to-order sandwiches and coffee, is opening its “first-ever freestanding drive-thru” in Falls Township, Pennsylvania.

The company says that construction is planned to begin late August, unlike other Wawa locations, this one will be "solely focused on drive thru and curbside pickup service," so you can grab some of your favourites without having to leave your car.

“We are hoping to learn from the layout, workflow and traffic flow at this location, as we continue to explore alternatives for longer term application to our stores post-COVID-19,” Terri Micklin, Wawa’s director of construction, said in a statement.

“We appreciate the opportunity to partner with Falls Township officials, who are providing us with the approvals and support of this newly designed store format that will be of benefit to the community.”

The store will be 1,850 square feet, located at the intersection of West Trenton and Pine Grove Roads—for reference, the world's biggest Wawa (as of 2018) rings in at 11,500 square feet, and we reported in January 2020 that the Philly's smallest Wawa (second smallest in the world) is "about 2,700 square feet."

As for the menu? There aren't many details available yet, but customers will be able to order “Wawa’s most popular food and beverages” (hopefully, that includes the hoagies) using “state-of-the-art technology,” per the announcement.

Value meals, combo meals, “specialty beverages,” and coffee will all be available. Wawa aims to open the location in December 2020—a new store under construction in Westampton, New Jersey, will also have a drive-thru feature.

Wawa isn’t the only brand that is expanding into drive-thru in light of COVID-19. On July 30, Shake Shack's chief executive officer, Randy Garutti, said the company has “started the design process for our first ever drive-thru location,” which is slated to open in 2021.

The fast casual restaurant also launched Shack Burger Kits on Goldbelly earlier this year, which allow customers to make their own ShackBurgers at home.
