Ensuring safety at petrol kiosks in Malaysia

Cooperation between petrol station operators and consumers is needed to ensure safety at the station. Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry (KPDNKK) Sabah Director Yahya Sulaiman said this is imperative considering that the petrol stations are high-risk areas for fire hazards.

"We do not want people to do finger-pointing (over two fire incidents at petrol stations this year) because both the station operators and consumers need to play their roles effectively to ensure safety. "The consumers need to know their rights and the operators have to make initiatives and take measures to ensure consumers' safety when they are pumping fuel or dealing at the counters.

"That is why I am emphasising a two-way cooperation between them as a holistic approach because based on my observation, consumers are still oblivious of the signs of do's and don'ts being put up at the petrol stations," he said. Yahya said this at a press conference after opening a Petroleum Safety campaign and Consumerism Programme at SMK Beaufort 2, recently.

A total of 250 students and 60 teachers from the school as well as Road Safety Department (JKJR) Director Herdiansah Abdul Karim, Fire and Rescue Services senior officers and school officials were at the event. The main objective of organising the campaign at the school was to reach out to students and teachers and to instil awareness among the future motorists.
