UK truckers want falafel over fry-ups

Forget fry ups and sugary snacks, today’s lorry drivers would rather have healthy foods whilst working, according to new research from the RAC.

More than four in ten drivers now say their biggest concern at work is a lack of healthy options while on the road.

The survey by RAC Truck Rescue is seen as a positive sign that the trucking industry is trying to overcome its unhealthy image, with recent research indicating that almost 30% of lorry drivers are obese or morbidly obese.

“The haulage sector industry has struggled with concerns over the health of its workforce so it’s really encouraging to see this shift in attitude – but the facilities need to be there to cater for those looing for a healthy option,” said RAC spokesman Matt Dallaway.

He continued: “Driver health is just as important as vehicle health for any fleet.”

The survey backs up the findings of a recent Transport Focus report that showed the basic needs of truckers are not being met – with A road particularly guilty of providing substandard facilities.

The campaign group will now work with the government and Highways England to try and improve the conditions and options available.

Other top gripes for lorry drivers included people using their mobile phones whilst driving and middle lane drivers.
