Germany clears the way for climate-friendly diesel

Federal Cabinet of Germany has finally approved an amendment to the Ordinance on the Quality and Labelling of Fuels. The inclusion of the diesel fuel standard DIN EN 15940 in the 10th BImSchV creates the basis for climate-friendly synthetic diesel pure fuels such as green electricity-based e-diesel and biogenic HVO to now be sold at public filling stations in Germany. The Federal Council still has to approve the amendment.

In Germany, it is not yet possible to sell fuels such as HVO or green electricity-based e-diesel at public filling stations, although they have already been approved by many vehicle manufacturers for use in diesel vehicles. The reason for this is that the Federal Republic of Germany is one of the few EU member states that has not yet implemented the European approval of fuels of the 15940 standard nationally.

Uniti Bundesverband Energie Mittelstand expressly welcomes today's decision. "This finally creates the option to sell and use it as a pure fuel," says Uniti Managing Director Elmar Kühn. It is now up to the state environment ministers to ensure the approval so that the change can come into force in mid-April 2024.
