Dutch town puts charging lamp post into use

The rise of electric cars means that (fast) charging stations are rapidly determining the streetscape in the city centre. This is a sore point for lovers of historic city centres. Alkmaar now has a solution for this: the town of Noord-Holland has put the first 'charging station' into use.

How do we make beautiful, old city centres suitable for electric vehicles without losing the unique character of the city? This is the question TotalEnergies asked itself. In city centres, not only is there often little space for charging points, they also usually do not fit into the historic streetscape.

This means that existing facilities and infrastructure must be used in a smart way. The municipality of Alkmaar and TotalEnergies found a solution in the 'charging taarn'. The first charging station in the form of a historic-looking lamppost was put into use this week on the embankment of the Nieuwlandersingel, on the edge of the historic city center of Alkmaar.

"The future and the past come together here by modernizing and at the same time preserving the historic cityscape," said alderman for Sustainability Christian Schouten at the inauguration. "These initiatives help the people of Alkmaar to become climate neutral."

The charging station is a pilot project and has been reimbursed with a European subsidy through POCITYF.
