Spooky key fob malfunction

Motorists at the Asda store in Great Barr, Birmingham, UK, were left unable to start their cars after a mysterious issue affecting cars with keyless entry and ignition.

A number car drivers were left stranded at a Birmingham supermarket petrol station after their key fobs mysteriously stopped working.

The motorists, all believed to be with keyless entry cars, had stopped on the station’s forecourt by a pump, ready to fill up their cars with fuel, but when they went to restart them they couldn’t. The problem is believed to have affected eight cars.

Some ‘abandoned’ their cars at the pumps and headed back to get their spare key fob, believing that was the issue. Others had their cars pushed from the forecourt.

One mum posting on the Nextdoor community site said: “Problem at Asda Queslett petrol station. Seems to be a problem connected to pumps for keyless cars. Once you are at the pump and turn the car off, it won’t start again.

“Eight cars affected. I was one of them. All power goes from the car. The man in front moved and I was going to pull up but pressed the car button to start it and the car was dead.

“I had lights only but nothing else. No door lock, ignition, alarm. The fob did nothing, like the battery had died. But it was a new battery. Two cars in other lanes also died. It was like the Twilight Zone. Cars just stopped for no reason. So weird.

“I had the same problem in the week but eventually the car started, but not today. I got stranded with a dog and son in the car. Other cars were abandoned at the pumps. Apparently, the staff were aware but carried on serving. They said ‘it’s been happening all day’, with a total of eight cars.”
