Asda has released the locations of 82 UK locations which are going to go fully cashless this summer. The supermarket is banning cash from fuel forecourts at these locations by the summer.
It has already stopped people paying this way at 14 of them - and now a further 68 have been added to the list, the Sun reported. Asda said all staff working at the fuel stations will be redeployed to stores, while the shift to “pay at pump” is only affecting forecourts that are found next to superstores.
Out of the 300 fuel forecourts attached to Asda superstores, over 150 are already unmanned. An Asda spokesperson said it had mad the move as more than 90% of all payments at superstore fuel station forecourts are already made via card or a contactless device.
They added: “The colleagues who worked on these sites are moving into the store so they can better serve our customers.” Now, the retailer has revealed the full list of locations where superstore forecourts are going cashless.
Some shoppers will not be pleased and many still want the option to pay in cash. The Keep it Cash street campaign and initiative was set up in 2022 as a response to what it described as the alarming rate at which the UK is moving towards a cashless society.
GB news has also been running a Don’t Kill Cash campaign and collecting signatures here. It says: “In the wake of the Covid pandemic, more and more shops, cafes and pubs are choosing to only accept card payments. And with the rise of Apple and Google Pay, vulnerable people who rely on cash are increasingly being left behind by the relentless march of technology.
“More than five million adults still rely on cash in the UK and it’s used in six billion transactions every year, but there are strong vested interests pushing for it to be permanently replaced by debit and credit cards and other electronic payments. These cost you more in the long-run and enable 3rd parties to track you and your spending.”
