New cars are getting on average 0.5 cm wider every year. This is the conclusion of a study by the environmental organisation Transport and Environment.
The latter analysed the dimensions of the 100 best-selling car models in the European Union. On average, they were 180.3 cm wide, while in 2018 it was only 177.9 cm. This means that the average car has become 2.5 cm wider in the past five years, so actually 0.5 cm per year.
Earlier, the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT), an organization that collects all data on newly-registered cars in Europe, also indicated that a widening of the vehicles is underway.
Their research showed that in Europe, the average width of new cars increased from 170.5 cm in 2001 to 180.2 cm in 2020. In Belgium, the width increased from 171.6 to 181.1 cm. The largest growth in breadth was recorded in luxury SUVs and pick-up trucks.
