As a comparison, there are 50 percent more petrol stations in Italy than its neighbour Germany, although significantly fewer people live there.
Italy is by far the European country with the most petrol stations. At least in 2021 and 2022, 21,700 facilities were counted where motorists can get fuel. This is followed by Germany (14,452), Turkey (12,671), Spain (12,084), France (11,040) and the United Kingdom (8,365), according to a chart published by Statista.
The fewest petrol stations are found in Hungary (2,012), Ireland (1,892), Slovakia (970), Latvia (600), Estonia (515) and Luxembourg (238).
The high number of petrol stations in Italy is surprising in view of a population of only 59 million and around 40 million registered cars. By way of comparison, around 83 million people live in Germany and there are 49 million registered cars.
One reason for the relatively high number of petrol stations in Italy can be explained by an often cost-effective operating structure. Many petrol stations take up very little space, as they often only offer one or two petrol pumps and no other services.
In addition, many are temporarily or permanently operated only automatically, which is why there are no or hardly any personnel costs.
