Germans are still very traditional when it comes to shopping: the majority of the population, 90 percent, still opts for the usual shopping at the supermarket checkout with staff. This is the finding of the review of the year 2023 from the annual survey conducted by the Allensbach Institute for Public Opinion Research on behalf of the German Payment Systems Initiative.
For German card payers and the younger generation, innovative concepts are part of the shopping model of the future: One in two would like to shop more at modern self-service checkouts in the future.
While 90 percent of the population still buys groceries and everyday products in the classic way at the supermarket checkout with checkout staff, the generation of 16-29-year-olds is saying goodbye to proven shopping traditions.
45 percent say they often or occasionally use the self-service checkout in the supermarket and almost as many as 40 percent have groceries delivered to their homes. Across generations, only 13 percent use the self-service checkout in the supermarket and only one in ten have groceries delivered to their home.
When it comes to payment methods at the on-site checkout, customers also rely on the tried-and-tested: 55 percent of consumers prefer to pay with the Girocard – if they pay by card. In the younger generation (16-29 year olds), 90 percent pay contactless with Girocard. But their use has also reached a new high of 73 percent across generations.
