Who wants to buy a service station in South Africa?

This article published by a local radio station JacarandaFM caught our editors attention this week only because previously, he had never wondered how much a fuel station in SA might turnover from its forecourt and shop. Well after reading this we might all learn something.

According to a 2023 Mail and Guardian report, there are about 12-million registered vehicles currently on South Africa’s roads. Assuming that the majority of these vehicles frequent petrol stations across the country, one can see how fuel stations are a booming business.

Listings of filling stations currently for sale shared on property agents Cyrus Brokers revealed how much money some petrol stations in South Africa make. Note that the amounts below are net profits, meaning they are the amounts earned after deducting all operating, interest.

According to these listings, "a major brand filling station" currently for sale in Gauteng’s East Rand earns a net monthly profit of R62,513, while two others in the same area bring in R132,850 and R156,538, respectively.

Other listings and their profits include:

Pretoria CBD - R256,473

Randburg - R84,697

Free State - R135,886

North West - R134,538

Eastern Cape - R205,711

KwaZulu-Natal has two stations up for grabs, each earning R240,000 and R390,000, respectively.

Limpopo had the most profitable listing, raking in R443,225 per month.

These profits are not an indication of the profit other petrol stations in these areas make, but rather each petrol station’s own earnings based on variable factors.

While fuel sales make up the biggest part of a fuel station's income, other factors also contribute. According to the Limpopo listing, these include:

Fuel sales – 339,741 litres per month

Convenience store sales – R2,237,669 per month

Lotto sales – R466,866 per month

Electricity sales – R179,537 per month

Airtime sales – R109,243 per month

Gas sales – R72,237 per month

Oil/lube sales – R 21,124 per month.
