Is von der Leyen sacrificing the combustion engine?

To stay in office, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is looking for votes, including from EU Greens and Social Democrats. Federal Transport Minister Volker Wissing has a clear opinion when it supports the so-called combustion engine phase-out. For the CDU, credibility is at stake.

In the dispute over the combustion engine phase-out from 2035, Federal Transport Minister Volker Wissing warns EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen against making concessions. "If Ursula von der Leyen once again speaks out in favor of a ban on internal combustion engines, the CDU will lose all its credibility," says the FDP politician.

The CSU top candidate and chairman of the EPP group in the European Parliament, Manfred Weber, had said in winter: "If my group can create a majority after the European elections, we will reverse the ban on internal combustion engines decided by the European Parliament in this legislative period." Wissing now announced that if von der Leyen were to make a U-turn out of self-interest with the support of her party CDU, then it would be "tantamount to a gigantic election fraud".

Currently, the EU Commission President is trying to keep her top post for another five years. To do this, she needs a majority of MEPs in the new EU Parliament behind her. She is currently trying to win votes from other parliamentary groups - including the Greens and the Social Democrats.
