Carrefour opens multiple hydrogen stations in Paris

French retail giant Carrefour has started operating new hydrogen refuelling stations in the Île-de-France, Paris region. The H2 stations are being set up in collaboration with HysetCo, a French pioneer in hydrogen mobility.

According to Hervé Mantoux, director of the fuel division at Carrefour, each station will have a daily distribution capacity of 500 kilograms of hydrogen, good for about 100 to 200 refueling sessions for cars and light commercial vehicles. The filling stations will be available to the public 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Carrefour, through Mantoux, sees hydrogen as an essential part of the future of sustainable mobility, especially given the limitations of the current electric vehicle infrastructure. "In total, around 500 terawatt hours of energy are distributed annually in France via the fossil pumps at our service stations. This is comparable to the total electricity production of all nuclear power plants combined," Mantoux said.

"We are convinced that hydrogen offers an excellent alternative and can play an important role in tomorrow's transport." Carrefour petrol stations are refuelled hundreds of thousands of times a week. This can be done emission-free via more than 1000 electric charging stations.

The choice of Île-de-France, the Paris region, as the location for the new H2 stations is strategic, as the region is already one of the best-equipped areas in Europe in terms of hydrogen refuelling stations and vehicles. Thanks to the collaboration with companies such as HysetCo and innovations in hydrogen technology, the region is a forerunner in the European hydrogen revolution, says Mantoux.
