Shell has decided to permanently close six of its seven hydrogen stations for passenger cars in California. The company has justified this decision due to supply problems and other external factors related to the market.
Shell had already announced in September last year that it would stop its plans to build and operate new hydrogen stations for light vehicles in California.
This announcement definitively ruled out the construction of 48 stations that had previously been planned. At that time, the company had already temporarily closed five of its stations, warning customers that a reopening date could not be guaranteed. Shell’s station network is reduced to just one for light vehicles
Similar cases in the UK
This is not the first change Shell has made to its hydrogen-related strategy. In 2022, Shell had already closed three of its hydrogen stations in the UK, signalling a similar priority towards heavy transport, as existing stations were not prepared to serve large trucks.
