Mayor's latest bid to drive cars out of Paris

Paris mayor, Anne Hidalgo, a socialist leader who has inflicted a number of punitive policies on drivers since 2014, slashed the speed limit on the Périphérique - the capital's busy eight-lane ring road motorway - to just 31mph, a move that has made journeys into Paris increasingly arduous for thousands of commuters.

Earlier this month she had banned the sale of diesel fuel at four popular filling stations on the capital's ring road which had previously accounted for half of all diesel receipts in the city.

According to French TV channel France 3, the move will 'lead to a significant transfer of vehicles to neighbouring refuelling stations, which are not designed to handle this new influx of customers' and therefore trigger further traffic jams and delays across other parts of the city.
