German Cartel Office head Andreas Mundt considers a central recording of prices at e-car charging stations to be risky. "In the case of charging stations, I fear that a central recording and publication of all prices could make it easier for providers to coordinate their prices," the President of the Bundeskartellamt told the "Rheinische Post".
It is different with fuel prices and Mundt advises motorists to compare fuel prices. "You can save a lot of money that way." Since 2013, the Bundeskartellamt has been continuously monitoring the fuel prices of around 15,000 petrol stations in Germany via the Market Transparency Unit for Fuels and making the data available to various providers of comparison apps.
Mundt explains why the price-fixing argument does not apply to fuels in his opinion: "even before the introduction of the Market Transparency Unit, the oil companies had always closely observed each other's prices at the petrol stations and aligned their pricing accordingly." Only since the cartel office has recorded prices centrally have motorists also had the opportunity to compare.
