Hand car wash firms have been collectively fined just under £3m in three months for employing staff who do not have the right to work in the UK, Home Office figures have revealed.
The latest list of firms from published from UK Home Office's Immigration Enforcement shows numerous car washes being fined tens of thousands of pounds for employing illegal workers.
The fines are for those who do know the immigration status of staff and do not act accordingly or those who do not know the immigration status of staff as they do not do the correct checks.
Immigration Enforcement's website said: "Working in the UK without the requisite permission ('illegal working') provides the practical means for migrants to remain in the UK unlawfully."
Throughout the UK more than 350 firms were fined almost £18.5 million for employing more than 550 illegal workers at some time between July 1 of last year and September 30 of last year.
The starting point for a first offence in the previous three years is £45,000 per illegal worker and the starting point for a further offence in the previous three years is £60,000 per illegal worker.
