Walmart to expand retail fuel netwiork

US hypermarket Walmart is “revamping its convenience services” and will open or remodel more than 45 fuel stations across the states this year, according to a press release sent to NACS.

Walmart currently operates 400+ fuel and convenience stations nationwide, and the new locations will bring the retailer’s store count to more than 450 locations across 34 states, Walmart said.

"We're continuing to invest in our nationwide, physical store footprint. By adding dozens of fuel and convenience stations this year, we are bringing even more value to our customers,” said Dave DeSerio, VP of fuel and convenience, Walmart U.S.

As of February 2025, there are 6,862 big box (also known as “hypermart”) retail sites selling fuel, including grocery club and warehouse stores, according to Energy Analysts International, Fuel Markets and Retail Group.

Walmart held a grand opening for its 400th fuel station in Palm Springs, California, in December. The retailer said it plans to expand its fuel station network during the next five years.
