This summer, Belgium reached the limit of one hundred thousand public charging points. According to EV Belgium, this not only marks an acceleration in the electrification of mobility, but also confirms that Belgium is one of the forerunners in Europe.
Ten years ago, electric cars and public charging stations were still rare. According to EV Belgium, this rapid growth is due to the combination of innovation by Belgian companies, investments by grid operators and political choices. The country currently has more than 100,000 public charging points and more than 380,000 fully electric passenger cars, making it the third largest charging infrastructure per capita.
"Reaching the 100,000 public charging point mark is not the end point, but proof that cooperation pays off," says Philippe Vangeel, director of EV Belgium. "Just like the smartphone at the time, this is the tipping point where the electric car really becomes mainstream. So there are more and more affordable models. In addition, range anxiety is a thing of the past: electric vehicles are improving, charging infrastructure is expanding, and fast chargers are offering increasingly high charging speeds.
