German support for one daily fuel price increase

Several German federal states are pushing for a legal limit on price fluctuations at petrol stations. Inspired by regulations in Austria, petrol and diesel prices should only increase once a day in the future. Price reductions, on the other hand, may be made at the pump at any time of the day.

According to a report by the Bundeskartellamt, petrol stations in Germany are increasingly changing their prices at the pump during the day. The result: it is almost impossible for motorists to find exactly those moments when they can refuel cheaply.

According to the federated entities, the increasingly frequent adjustments to fuel prices are causing a lack of transparency and uncertainty for motorists. Targeted refueling during periods of low prices is becoming less and less feasible.

However, this could soon change. According to the Länder, a method that has been around for a long time in Austria could also be applied in Germany. In Austria, it is common for petrol stations to raise prices only once a day, at 12:00. Price reductions, on the other hand, remain allowed at all times.
