The UPC barcode, also known as the 1D barcode, has been crucial to retail for decades. However, with the increasing demand to more detailed product information and improved inventory management, industry is moving toward 2D.
2D barcodes, such as QR codes, can store significantly more data, enhancing functionality at the point of sale and throughout the supply chain.
In response to these advantages, industry stakeholders have launched an initiative known as Sunrise 2027, which calls for retailers to be able to scan and process 2D at checkout by the end of 2027.
