Netherlands new hydrogen stations and 300 vehicles

Entrepreneurs are once again starting to build hydrogen filling stations in the Nederlands. A total of eight partnerships will receive €40 million in subsidies for this project.

They are doing so with support from the Hydrogen in Mobility Subsidy Scheme (SWIM). Besides building new filling stations and expanding others, entrepreneurs are also purchasing over 300 hydrogen-powered trucks and passenger buses with the subsidy.

Mainly subsidies for heavy goods vehicles

New hydrogen refueling stations will be built in Meerkerk, Steenwijk, Hattemerbroek, and Woerden. In four other municipalities, refueling stations will be expanded to include a refueling option for hydrogen-powered vehicles.

In addition, the partners applied for subsidies for a total of 355 hydrogen vehicles, mostly heavy-duty vehicles. Applicants will also receive subsidies for hydrogen-powered passenger buses.

Fewer problems than with the power grid

Hydrogen vehicles have a long range, short refueling times (maximum 15 minutes), and they cause fewer problems with the power grid. A hydrogen bus can also offer a solution for wheelchair-accessible buses that are too heavy for batteries.

SWIM encourages alternative fuels

SWIM contributes to the requirement to have a hydrogen refueling station in every urban hub by 2030. Currently, there are 23 public hydrogen refueling stations, several of which are suitable for heavy-duty road transport. Since April 13, 2024, European countries have been required to promote infrastructure and transport for fuels other than fossil fuels.
