Combustion engine phase-out may be sooner

German Federal Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil hopes for a common position of the governing coalition on the phase-out of internal combustion engines by the beginning of December. "I want us to find a solution very quickly," said the SPD leader of the "Rheinische Post" (Saturday). His party has moved very clearly because it wants to secure jobs in the car industry.

Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) wants to lobby the EU for changes to the end of the registration of combustion engines, which is planned for 2035. However, there is still no common line in the coalition. The Social Democrats generally want to stick to the phase-out date for new combustion engines from 2035. Klingbeil, however, has recently been open to solutions that combine electromobility and combustion engine technologies.

The future belongs to e-cars, Klingbeil stressed. Germany needs more technology options such as range extenders and plug-in hybrids on the way there. Above all, however, it is now about unity. "We must present ourselves as Germany in Brussels," the Vice-Chancellor stressed. If Germany improves the political framework, then there must also be "a crystal-clear commitment to Germany as a business location and to job security in this country" from the automotive companies.
