14 hydrogen stations in Germany will close

Fourteen hydrogen filling stations in Germany will close their doors on December 31, 2025. According to the operator H2 Mobility, these stations no longer meet the current requirements.

The company says it will now focus on a new generation of hydrogen refuelling stations with significantly higher capacity and aimed primarily at the transport sector rather than hydrogen-powered passenger cars.

The 14 hydrogen stations closed by H2 Mobility, Europe's largest hydrogen station operator, are located in Braunschweig, Duisburg, Essen, Ingolstadt, Laatzen, Limburg, Lohfelden, Metzingen and Wendlingen, among others. Customers can still visit these stations to fill up with hydrogen until the end of December, after which they will be closed and dismantled.

According to Martin Jüngel, Managing Director and CFO of H2 Mobility, filling stations, which launched the hydrogen mobility initiative more than a decade ago, cannot adapt to the changing technology landscape and increasing demands. "They are characterised by low storage capacity and, from the current point of view, insufficient performance for the commercial vehicle sector.

These stations are designed for a passenger car market that has not developed as expected.
