Across Germany, 22 publicly accessible hydrogen filling stations were closed in 2025. A further 14 locations are scheduled to be permanently taken offline by Jan 1st this year.
This affects a total of 36 stations that were built in recent years with substantial European funding. Many of these facilities have only been in operation for a few years
Against this backdrop, Frank Stuckstedte, a resident of Rheda-Wiedenbrück, launched the petition "Stop the dismantling of hydrogen filling stations – preserve the Hâ‚‚ infrastructure in Germany."
The petition does not promote a specific propulsion technology, but rather opposes the haphazard dismantling of publicly funded infrastructure without viable transitional solutions, transparency, or political accountability.
Municipal projects lose their foundation
Municipal users are particularly affected – for example, in waste management, fire departments, or municipal vehicle fleets. These vehicles were procured in reliance on the existing infrastructure and are technically fully operational. However, the closure of the gas stations deprives them of their operational basis.
This threatens to derail municipal demonstration and flagship projects – not due to technological failure, but because of the premature disappearance of the infrastructure. Instead of innovative role models, monuments to a lack of political reliability are likely to emerge.
