BP's all-female lead spells end to renewables

BP named veteran insider Carol Howle as its deputy chief executive with a focus on strategy, which in the case of the oil supermajor is likely to involve putting further distance between it and renewable energy.

Howle becomes number two to newly installed CEO Meg O’Neill, who started work on 1 April, completing a female top two that’s unique in the history of major oil and gas businesses.

With new chairman Albert Manifold in place since last summer, Howle’s appointment marks a complete clear out at the top of BP of the team that less than five years ago was promising to reshape the oil giant in the image of net zero.
