NZ commission gives OK for merger

Petrol station brands Gull and NPD can merge, after the Commerce Commission determined the move would not lead to higher prices, or lower quality service for motorists.

The competition watchdog announced on Friday in a statement that it had granted clearance for Astra Energy Group Limited to acquire all shares in Gull’s parent company, GNZ Holdco Limited, and NPD Group Investments Limited.

While the commission had earlier raised provisional concerns about the deal, a thorough investigation found the merger was unlikely to substantially lessen competition in any New Zealand market.
