India limits operators bulk buying fuel

The Indian government has banned commercial users from buying bulk fuel at retail petrol pumps. It has also caped diesel purchases at retail outlets at 200 litres per customer or vehicle per day and permits sales only through vehicle fuel tanks or PESO-approved containers.

The restrictions, which will be in place for up to 90 days, follows abnormal demand growth, particularly that of diesel, in some pockets after bulk users started buying fuel from petrol pumps due to the pricing difference.

The government has in addition barred industrial, commercial and institutional consumers from purchasing petrol and diesel through retail fuel stations, directing them instead to source supplies from designated bulk sale points, according to an official order issued by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.
