Sainsbury's significant step at 150 stores

UK supermarket SAINSBURY’S is rolling out facial recognition cameras to 150 more stores before Christmas after a trial showed the technology stopped nine in ten repeat offenders from coming back.

The supermarket giant already has the AI-powered system live in 55 branches, and says it has a 99.98% accuracy rate, with every alert checked by a trained member of staff before anyone is approached.

The technology is made by Facewatch, which describes itself as “the UK’s leading facial recognition company providing a cloud-based facial recognition security system to safeguard businesses against crime.”

It works by retailers uploading reports of bad behaviour, such as shoplifting or violence, with moderators then reviewing camera footage and tagging suspects. When a flagged person walks into any participating store, Facewatch sends an instant alert.
