Metro Petroleum says it is “deeply disappointed” nine of its stores have been issued closure orders after authorities raided more than 100 service stations in search of illegal cigarettes and vapes.
A spokesman for the service station chain said Metro Petroleum has taken “immediate steps to terminate its arrangements with these operators.” “Metro Petroleum has a zero-tolerance approach to the sale of illicit tobacco and vaping products,” a spokesman said.
Hundreds of officers raided servos across he country as part of a crackdown on illicit tobacco trading, dubbed Operation Shorthand.
“Metro Petroleum is a petroleum brand and fuel supplier. We do not operate, staff or manage the retail businesses conducted at Metro Petroleum branded sites.
“Those businesses are run by independent operators, who are responsible for complying with all laws relating to what is sold at their sites.
