Rheinmetall and TankE develop curb charging

The German arms manufacturer Rheinmetall and TankE have jointly designed a charging infrastructure for cities and municipalities. This powers electric vehicles from the curb.

While Rheinmetall is best known for its military activities, its subsidiary Pierburg has now turned its attention to the charging infrastructure market. It has developed a modular curb that also acts as a charging station.

To do this, charging technology is integrated into the curb. The system enables AC charging with an output of up to 22 kW via a three-phase 400 V connection.

The concept has been tested since April 2024 in the Lindenthal district of Cologne, where four charging curbs have been put into operation by residents at two locations. The pilot project has yielded positive conclusions.

Curbs were found to be technically available more than 99% of the time, regardless of weather conditions, and recorded more than 2,800 charging sessions, averaging more than two per charging station per day.
