Emergency plans in France to sort fuel crisis

France is drawing up emergency measures to tackle a looming fuel crisis, as diesel prices have hit record highs and forecourts have run dry. Ministers will announce a support package on Tuesday after Sébastien Lecornu, the French prime minister, held crisis talks with industry and energy leaders on Monday.

Panic buying has swept the country, leaving one-fifth of French petrol stations short of at least one fuel type. TotalEnergies forecourts, which cap prices at €2.25 a litre for diesel and €1.99 for petrol, are bearing the brunt of the shortages, Roland Lescure, the finance minister, said.

Independent petrol stations have seen customer traffic drop between 20pc and 40pc, as motorists turn to Total. The French government has allowed fuel distributors to top up supplies to forecourts by selling "summer-blend diesel", which is less cold-resistant, for two weeks beyond the usual Nov 1 cut-off.
