Google puts fuel prices in front of millions

Forecourt retailers face greater pressure to keep their fuel pricing competitive and their data accurate, after the UK government confirmed that near real-time petrol and diesel prices are now being displayed on Google.

The move, announced 8 October 26, means motorists searching Google Maps for nearby fuel stations can see current petrol and diesel prices and compare forecourts before deciding where to fill up.

For retailers, the development brings fuel-price transparency to a much larger audience and could make differences in local pump prices more visible to customers.

The government said around 99 per cent of fuel sold on UK roads is now reflected in Fuel Finder data, which is already being used by apps including Waze, Petrol Prices, the AA, Confused.com and RAC Fuel Watch.
