French multi-energy major TotalEnergies SE (EPA:TTE) has joined a group of companies led by Abu Dhabi's renewable energy firm Masdar that aim to produce sustainable aviation fuel from green hydrogen.
TotalEnergies will participate in the initiative with its expertise in the production of sustainable aviation fuel, marketing and supply, Masdar said on Wednesday.
The project was launched a year ago by Masdar which is collaborating with the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy, Etihad Airways, Lufthansa Group (ETR:LHA), Khalifa University of Science and Technology, Siemens Energy (ETR:ENR), and Marubeni Corp (TYO:8002). As part of it, the partners will build a demonstrator plant at Masdar City that would feature an electrolyser running on solar power to demonstrate the use of green hydrogen as a sustainable fuel. Initially, the plant will produce green hydrogen for passenger cars and buses in the Masdar City area while a kerosene synthesis is built to convert the green hydrogen into sustainable aviation fuel. The second phase of the project will explore the production of decarbonised fuels for the maritime sector.
The partners plan to launch the front end engineering design (FEED) stage of the project later this year after completing feasibility studies and conceptual designs since the start of the initiative in January 2021.
"The demonstrator plant will help to establish the commercial viability of green hydrogen as an essential decarbonised fuel of the future, and will support Abu Dhabi’s development as a green hydrogen hub," said Masdar's chief executive Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi.
