Nigeria comes down hard on illegal fuel selling operations

Operators of petrol filling stations in Edo State have been given two weeks ultimatum to regularize and renew their operating licenses. The Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR), said any operator who failed to carry out this directive would face the full weight of the law.

Edo State head of DPR, Maynard Oriafo, who disclosed this to newsmen, said the new directive was aimed at ensuring that retail outlets conformed to rules, and that anyone who violates it would be deemed to be carrying out illegal activities. Oriafo, who led some officials to some filling stations in Benin City, also sealed up two stations for under dispensing. The station is Petom Oil and Gas along Benin-Lagos express way.

He said the tour was in compliance with the new federal government’s directive that fuel be sold at N145 per liter. According to him, “Any offender who violates the official pump price will have his station sealed, license suspended, while repeated offenders will have theirs revoked.” Some of the major retail outlets visited so far sold at N145 per liter. Oriafo said this effort would be sustained to ensure compliance, as well as ensure that Nigerians were not short-changed.
