Balearic Islands tourism boom has no effect on fuel stations

The tourism boom in the Balearic Islands has had no effect on local service station sales according to Jesus Salas, President of the Association of Service Stations in the Balearic Islands.

Visitor numbers have increased following terrorist attacks in Tunisia, Turkey and Egypt that have driven holiday makers back to European destinations.

Salas explained, in an interview with mallorcadiario.com, that tourists come with a budget and spend a little on fuel. He also said that car rental companies already have their own gas pumps so tourists have little need to fill up elsewhere.

Competition is also stiff as five more service stations have recently opened, not to mention the weak price of fuel.

Earlier this year the Balearic Islands had considered banning tourist cars to avoid gridlock on the small islands. In peak season there are as many as 20,000 cars on Formentera, which is only 19km long.
