Tanzania challenges fuel retailers to be innovative

Its government has challenged filling station operators and dealers to be innovative and expand their network to remote areas where there is a huge demand for fuel.

Deputy Minister for Energy Judith Kapinga said this on October 21 during the Puma Energy Tanzania ceremony to recognize the best Puma Energy filling station operators countrywide. “The expansion of fuel filling stations is required especially in rural areas because fuel is frequently needed and people face challenges of getting reliable fuel,” she said.

Available data shows that from 2018 to December 2020 the number of active petrol stations in the country increased by 10 percent from 1,596 to 1,759. This was attributed to the growth in economic activities and improvement in road networks.

According to Kapinga, the government has been recognizing the contribution of filling station operators and dealers by setting conducive environments for them to operate their business effectively.

She noted that most fuel filling stations are in urban areas, and urged dealers to take the chance to establish more in rural areas and reduce the number of people from carrying fuel in jericans from one place to another searching for fuel.

“ Fuel is also required in remote areas, although most of the fuel filling stations are in towns. I urge you to expand your business in various parts of the regions such as Ruvuma, Iringa and Njombe where there is still a challenge of fuel due to lack of filling stations,” she said.

Puma Energy Tanzania Managing Director Fatma Abdallah said that the company has already put in place strategic plans to have 120 filling fueling retail stations by the end of this year alone in order to serve Tanzanians better.

“We want to position ourselves as the leading company in this sector therefore, we aim to have more fuel filling stations in the country but mostly in remote areas where our services are needed most,” Abdallah said.

She added that retail dealers have a positive impact in making the company survive and reach its goals.
